INTRODUCTION: DISCLAIMERS
PART I: SYSTEM MECHANICS
PART II: CHARACTER CREATION
Disclaimer I.
No, this isn't a disclaimer about the supernatural content of this game. Vampires, magic, demons…everyone knows those are all real.
This is a disclaimer about how this game works as a superhero game.
Despite its focus, there's no reason you couldn't use darkpages to run a “fights, flights & tights” style superhero game. But there are things that we should get out of the way, right away…
First of all, don't expect to model your favorite superheroes (real or imagined) using these rules. It's possible to twist an existing superhero into a darkpages version but those looking for a “be all, end all” supers game are going to leave unhappy.
Second, and most important of all: this ain't a physics engine. There are no rules to tell you how much your character can bench press or how fast he can run. The answers to those questions are ones only you can answer. How much can your character bench press? How fast can your character run? What's important (and where success and failure enter the picture) is whether or not your character can do it when it counts.
Or, in other words, who would win in a fight? Well, that depends on who's writing the story.
Disclaimer II.
darkpages is a “supernatural superheroes” game inspired by the work of comics visionaries like Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Garth Ennis and Grant Morrison. The default setting is the City, a place of quiet secrets and sinister conspiracies. Angels and demons play a dangerous game with the souls of mortals at stake. Weird creatures stalk the shadows and masked vigilantes seek their own kind of justice in a corrupt society.
This special “advance” edition is an early version of the game, presented bare bones-style with rules for conflict resolution, character creation and character advancement. The full version (to be released Summer 2005) promises several settings, characters, examples of play and an introduction to horror comics by Jason Roberts, comics fan and creator of the FVLMINATA roleplaying game.
